Rafael van der Vaart sees Joey Veerman as a potential starter under new Netherlands coach Xavi. The former international, who earned 109 caps, believes the midfielder, who moved from PSV to Borussia Dortmund this summer, fits perfectly with the new manager's style.
"Xavi loves football and that's why Veerman is back in the picture," said Van der Vaart. He praised Veerman's performances in Germany, where expectations are high but not extreme. The Dutch squad currently tops their World Cup qualifying group with seven points from three matches. The next test is a home fixture against Germany on 24 September.
Other selection surprises
Van der Vaart also commented on the call-ups for Gjivai Zechiël and Ruben van Bommel. Both players have earned their spots according to him, though their inclusion did come as a surprise. He was full of praise for Van Bommel, who has recovered from a serious cruciate ligament injury. "He radiates a lot of strength and has really taken a step forward," the analyst said. He referenced the well-known saying 'every disadvantage has its advantage' regarding the winger's rehabilitation.
The former international expressed excitement about the upcoming match against Germany. "I just have the feeling," he said, adding that he believes the whole of the Netherlands feels the same. The Dutch are unbeaten in their last five matches, with three wins and two draws. The most recent result was a 1-1 draw with Morocco at the end of June. The full squad and upcoming schedule can be found on our site. The match against Germany will be a key benchmark for the new direction under Xavi.
