Arne Slot to Stay in Club Football: No National Team Coach for Netherlands
Former Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who was considered a potential successor to Ronald Koeman as the head coach of the Dutch national team, has chosen not to take on the role. Instead, he will remain focused on coaching at the club level.
Slot was often mentioned as the ideal candidate for the position of national team coach after Ronald Koeman. Recently, NRC reported that the KNVB had a contract ready until mid-2030 for Slot. However, it seems that he prefers to commit only until the 2028 European Championships.
Although it seemed like Slot was open to the role, it is now clear that he does not see himself as bondscoach at this time and will remain focused on club football. The KNVB must therefore continue its search for a new successor. Oranje will be playing against Germany in the Nations League on September 24th, where Jürgen Klopp has just been appointed as the new head coach.
Slot was sacked by Liverpool in May after a disappointing season and since then has been without a club. He had interest from clubs like AC Milan and Fulham but no agreements were reached. Al-Ahli also considered him for the position of successor to Matthias Jaissle, who is moving to Newcastle United, but Slot did not want to take up the offer in Saudi Arabia.
The KNVB will now need to act quickly to find a suitable replacement for Koeman. The search should start with clear guidelines: the new coach must be willing to travel with the team to the 2028 European Championships.
