Arne Slot to coach Netherlands

Arne Slot is appointed as the new coach of the Netherlands national team, he will work for the next two years. This was announced by the KNVB on Monday.

Slot was one of the main candidates for the position from the start. He is available since his departure from Liverpool, which announced in late May that it would part ways with him immediately. Slot gave the English top club its twentieth league title in its history in his first season, but after a much more difficult second season, Liverpool decided to take a different course.

Why it matters for Netherlands

The KNVB has been searching for a successor to Ronald Koeman since the end of June. The 63-year-old coach decided not to renew his contract after Oranje was eliminated from the World Cup by Morocco on penalties. Top football director Nigel de Jong then stated that there was some urgency due to the start of the Nations League, but that the football association wanted to act carefully.

What comes next?

Peter Bosz can succeed Arne Slot in 2028. The PSV coach extended his contract with PSV on February 1 for two seasons and is therefore tied to Eindhoven until mid-2028. Bosz was also mentioned as a candidate immediately after Koeman's departure. The PSV coach did not want to go into the details of the vacancy at the beginning of July, but did not rule out a future as coach definitively.
